Gloria Bisset Turning 90

The members of LSC&PH wish Gloria Bisset a very happy 90th Birthday and send their congratulations for her January 1,2026 milestone.

Gloria, who lives in Queensland, is the widow of one the absolute icons of Lord Somers Camp and Power House being Stan Bisset MC,OAM,MID.

Stan was a Lord Somers Camp and a Power House Rugby Club member who was one of 3  Power House Rugby Club members, along with Andy Barr and Max Carpenter , selected for the 1939 Australian Wallabies Rugby Tour to England. The touring team arrived in England on the 3rd of September,1939; the day war was declared between England and Germany. The tour was immediately abandoned with no games being played.

As a result of the outbreak of war, Stan returned home and enlisted with  2nd 14th Battalion (the Power House battalion) along with Phil Rhoden as second in command, Stan’s brother Butch, Charlie Butler and many other Power House men. The 2nd 14th served with distinction on the Kokoda Track playing a major role in securing victory against the Japanese armed forces. Sadly, Butch was mortally wounded and died in Stan’s arms on the track.

Post war, Stan was instrumental in getting Lord Somers Camp and Power House re-established. He was involved in many activities and committees including the incorporation of the Association, the Club House Building Appeal, Legacy and he was a member of the inaugural LSC&PH Council.

In 1946, aged 35, he was the playing Rugby Club Captain and in 1952 coached the A Grade team to its first ‘post-war’ finals appearance. He was awarded Life Membership of the Rugby Club.

Stan was the driving force behind establishing the Honour Board at Camp, and the ceremony remembering of the names of the fallen on the Friday night of Big Camp.

Stan’s last visit to Camp was the Oldies Camp in 2003 where he entertained members with two of his favourite songs ‘Old Man River’ and the ‘Swazi Warrior Song’ in his fine baritone voice. At the time of his passing in 2010. Stan was the oldest surviving Wallaby Rugby international –  a revered achievement which was recognised Australia wide
